What is a Certified Translation? Requirements for Ireland.

Many processes and documents require certified translations in order to be considered official. These can include birth certificates marriage certificates and more. I’ve added a full list at the end of this post to give you an overview of just some of the document translation services offered by Instant Translation.

If you require translation of any of these official documents, or need an interpreter in an official capacity, it’s likely that you’ll need them to be approved or certified for use in legal systems etc. So how do you determine this?

The Irish Translators’ and Interpreters Association was put in place to help citizens when choosing a translator or translation company. It was formed in 1986 and to date, the ITIA is the only professional association in Ireland representing the interests of practising translators and interpreters. It allows professional translators and interpreters to put themselves forward for ‘certified’ status.

“The aim of the ITIA in offering its members ‘ITIA Certified Translator’ status is to achieve formal recognition for the profession and the status of a Certified Translator from the Irish legal system, government departments, state institutions and the business community, and to maintain the standards of professional excellence through continuing professional development programmes.”

When a translator is certified by the ITIA, you can be sure you’re going to receive an accurate and appropriate translation suitable for use in Ireland and Irish legal systems.

After working with a translator, you may also need to ‘legalise’ your documents. This is done in one of two ways, depending on the country the document is being translated for. This can be done by the addition of an ‘Apostille‘ seal or through consular legalisation. You can view a full list of countries accepting the Apostille seal for legalisation here.
